In the new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, there are issues with sneaky peekers. The “peeking” through emotes is now set to be prevented. Treyarch will introduce a second camera system in a patch.
This is the problem: Players have found a way to trick the gesture system in Black Ops 4 to gain an advantage.
When they use emotes that are executed in the third-person perspective, the camera pulls back a bit. The camera is then movable and can be controlled. Players can peek around corners like this.
This becomes a problem especially in the “Blackout” mode when opponents are hiding behind trees and think they are safe, but are then discovered and eliminated by gesturing players.
Examples of emote peeking: Here in the video, a player uses the emote “Sitting Bull” to see what’s going on around him.
On Twitter and Reddit, there are more examples of the “peeking” phenomenon.

With the next patch, a second camera system is coming
This is how Treyarch plans to solve the problem: The developer of Black Ops 4 already responded on Friday on Reddit and stated that they will address “emote peeking” with one of the upcoming patches.
Treyarch says: “We are working on an update to create two systems for the gestures. The system we have now, and a second system for competitive modes.”
In competitive mode, the “free camera view” will then be turned off, and different camera perspectives will be used to solve the problem:
- The camera mode, as it is now, will then be active in the preliminary round of Blackout, where players can send emotes to each other.
- The new mode will be used where gestures could otherwise negatively impact gameplay.
Treyarch continues: “We want our players to enjoy the gestures as intended, but not at the expense of gameplay.”
However, it is still unclear when the first patch will arrive. The system is currently in development and is expected to go live along with some other bug fixes.
