Many gamers use a gaming mouse on their PC. But is a 20-year-old mouse worth it? A well-known YouTuber gave it a try.
Most users game on their gaming PC with a gaming mouse. Manufacturers regularly release new products to improve their devices or equip them with new features. You can also find the best current gaming mice on MeinMMO.
But can you still game smoothly with old hardware today? A YouTuber bought a 20-year-old mouse and compared it to a top mouse from 2022.

What did the YouTuber test? YouTuber Linus Sebastian from Linus Tech Tips compared the well-known G Pro Wireless from Logitech with the Razer Boomslang in his video.
- The G Pro Wireless was among the most popular gaming mice among professionals in 2022. It is very lightweight, works wirelessly, and uses Logitech’s current top sensor, which delivers up to 25,000 DPI.
- The Boomslang 2000 was released at the end of 1999 and uses a ball inside. This ball helps transmit movement to the computer. With a resolution of 2000 DPI, the mouse is far behind the G Pro Wireless.
How does it feel to play with both mice? Linus tests both mice using the Aimlab program. Here he must hit targets at a distance with a pistol within a certain time. He conducts the test sequentially with both mice:
- With the G Pro Wireless, Linus hits 114 out of 159 shots, achieving an accuracy of 71%.
- With the Boomslang 2000, Linus hits a total of 79 out of 132 shots, achieving an accuracy of 59%.
While he can hit numerous targets easily with the G Pro Wireless, Linus has greater difficulties with the Boomslang 2000. Overall, he is not very enthusiastic, which you can also see in his video:
He explains that the gaming mouse is extremely uncomfortable. After a short time, his arm, shoulder, and wrist hurt. He can only imagine how his arm would feel after two weeks.
With the ball, there is another problem: If you move the mouse strongly with the ball, you cannot control the movement of the ball properly because it keeps rolling a bit further. In everyday life, there is also a slight drift to the right.
Because of the ball, the entire mouse is also very heavy. While the Logitech G Pro weighs only 81 grams, the Razer Boomslang 2000 weighs 141 grams.
Of course, you can still game with an old mouse in 2022. However, Linus does not want to recommend the old mouse because there are simply too many good alternatives available in 2022.
Today you won’t find a ball in any mouse
What is used today? Today, all manufacturers use optical sensors in mice. Ball mice were prone to dirt, and you had to regularly clean the ball and the inside of the mouse.
Big manufacturers like Razer, Roccat, or Logitech now rely on their own developments in sensor technology or on well-known solutions from PixArt, which is one of the largest manufacturers in the sensor field.
