After months of back and forth, the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War finally shows the first proper trailer – and that in the Battle Royale Warzone. MeinMMO summarizes the reactions.
What was going on? Call of Duty 2020 has already done many things differently than its predecessors months before the release. The reveal came much later than CoD players are used to, and the nature of the reveal was something quite special. Instead of relying on the usual channels like trade shows or press releases, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War showed its first proper trailer to players, in-game in the Battle Royale Warzone.

Reveal event for self-playing was well received – but caused problems
What kind of event was that? The reveal event started on August 6th. Some streamers and news sites received mysterious boxes that eventually led to the first official mini-teaser after a weeks-long hunt. We have summarized the hunt for the first trailer for you here.
The whole thing culminated in an in-game event that was active for an hour yesterday, on August 26th, in Call of Duty: Warzone. MeinMMO actually live-tweeted it. Throughout the event, a modified Plunder mode replaced all other game modes. Here, 4 tasks had to be completed, and at the end of a crazy round, you got to see the trailer.
How did the event go over? The reactions to this crazy trailer release are, however, mixed. On one side, there are players who could hardly believe what they experienced. On the other hand, there were also many who were annoyed because they could not start the regular Warzone for an hour and instead were only exposed to advertisements for the new CoD game.
@5PYGL4SS wrote on Twitter: “Guys. This game reveal was the first time I had to cry in a game… Thank you for letting me feel like a kid again for a moment.”
pm_bouchard1967 wrote on reddit: “It’s advertising. Funny advertising, to be honest, but ultimately an ad for the new game. I had hoped that at least something related to Warzone would be available. A new map or something. But this is quite disappointing.”
solesupply wrote on reddit: “I think it was pretty damn cool… I admit I was a little disappointed that the map wasn’t ‘nuked’ when we all had to run to the stadium. Overall, this event was a blast, and I wish we would have seen something like this more often in Warzone in recent months.”
Another problem was campers. The last item on the to-do list during the event led you to a familiar “Black Ops” operator – Frank Woods. However, his location appeared to be the same for many players in the match, leading some nasty trolls to camp there. “AmpdVodka” wrote on reddit: “As predicted, other players are ruining the event ‘Know Your Story’… The event is over. We missed the chance to get the blueprint. I can’t believe it. Due to other players trolling, we missed out on the blueprint. Fu**ing wow.”
Additionally, there were problems with the timing, especially in the USA. The event started for us at 7:30 PM – a perfect time for many to check in after work. However, depending on the time zone, the event took place at very inconvenient times and fell right in the middle of the day. That’s why many are upset that they had no chance to earn the rewards that the event distributed to players on the side. “Li0nSlicer” wrote on reddit: Is it over already? Quite a hassle for people who, well, you know, work in the middle of the day.”

Trailer evokes mixed opinions – expectations were high
How did the information about the new CoD go over? Here too, opinions are rather divided. Many players are excited about the new game and eager to experience the next “Black Ops” episode. However, a large portion seems to be rather skeptical and is waiting for further developments. Particularly because there were few images of the multiplayer and the zombies mode.
@RealBlazeStorm on Twitter: “Yes, it just feels like a normal CoD campaign trailer. We all know how it usually plays, and we also know that this part of the game is only really important to a minority. We all want to see something about the multiplayer or zombies, not the campaign.”

One major point of criticism that keeps coming up is the retraction of the first CoD trailer due to a scene that apparently didn’t sit well with China. Especially since the words “Know Your History” are mentioned repeatedly. On YouTube, the most liked comment under the trailer on the official “Call of Duty” channel is exactly about that: “julius ochoa” writes on YouTube: “Activision: Know Your History. Also Activision: Tiananmen Square never happened.”
Two other fears that players often express are collaboration with Sony/PlayStation and the possible size of the game on the hard drive.

@TheNamessJT on Twitter: The event was insane! Great job Treyarch… The question I had to think about – When Cold War comes out, do we need to have Modern Warfare installed? I hope not, that would mean 300 GB or more with the Cold War files.
Overall, many players particularly appreciated the reveal event and commend the effort that developer Treyarch put into the reveal. However, fears still outweigh, as there is currently too little information to form a complete picture.
Many wonder how matchmaking will work or how multiplayer maps will be implemented in Cold War. Until the most important questions are clarified, players will likely continue to approach the new title with caution.
