Eternal Magic is a new MMORPG that has just entered open beta. The initial reactions to the game have been quite positive, but particularly in PvP, there are many elements copied from other games.
Where is it copied? On September 26, Eternal Magic, an MMORPG from China, started its open beta. The first players have now reached the PvP and encountered some interesting maps there.
One of these maps strongly reminds players of the Hammer of the Skies map from Guild Wars 2. The basic layout and even the details are nearly identical, as reddit user addol95 documented in a screenshot:
However, if you think that this one place could be a coincidence, you will find plenty of other images that show the opposite.
Which other games are being copied? In a YouTube video, the user Спейс documented some other cases where assets and layouts of maps have been taken over.
Starting from minute 17:56, it is very clear that Eternal Magic also used the Arathi Basin and the Eye of the Storm from World of Warcraft. The layout and scenery are far too similar.
Other areas from Guild Wars 2 can also be found in the PvP maps. Particularly, the Hammer of the Skies was recycled in almost every detail.
Players of Chinese Developers Not Surprised
How are players reacting to the copying? Many users on reddit are not surprised at all. For them, Eternal Magic was doomed to fail from the start due to its Chinese developer Duoyi .
As JakhiAD writes:
They are Chinese, what do you expect?
This taps into a common stereotype that Chinese companies shamelessly copy. Blizzard filed a lawsuit against such a clone in August and it wasn’t the first case. Eternal Magic also seems to use assets from other games without any agreement.
There are also games from China that are not copies, such as the MMORPG Perfect World, which has just been released as a mobile game, or Arena of Valor.
How do players generally like the MMORPG? Eternal Magic focuses primarily on PvP and social aspects such as fashion shows, housing, or weddings.
Actually, the MMORPG was not so bad in the eyes of the first players. It was praised especially for its good and fluid combat system, class design, and variety in PvP.
On the other hand, however, the graphics and the real-money shop are bothersome to many players. Thus, reddit user Saget84 summarizes:
As another person already said, the combat system is really good. It is fluid and has a great variety of skills. The rest is more or less an improved mobile game with a lot of cash shop. [..]
The post was written even before the discovery of the copied assets.
Have you had any experiences with Eternal Magic? If so, do you like it?
