What really makes The Creator stand out is its comparatively low budget, allowing the film to compete with the big blockbusters.
The production costs for films have increased significantly in recent years. In 1997, the film Face/Off
with a budget of 80 million dollars was one of the most expensive action films. By comparison, Ant-Man 3
cost a whopping 200 million dollars.
And suddenly, The Creator came along with a budget of also 80 million dollars and feels like a 300 million dollar production. Moreover, the film changes something forever in Hollywood with its techniques, or as Marco describes it, he democratizes filmmaking.
Behind it all is Gareth Edwards, known for films like Rouge One
and Godzilla
. After his last hit, however, he stepped back from cinemas for 7 years before working on The Creator.
Edwards is known for having developed an innovative method. His idea was to film entire movies at special, exotic, and suitable locations and then to re-work them with visual effects
. This differs significantly from the approach taken for these films otherwise.
But this enabled Edwards, for example, to allow small teams to produce their films cost-effectively. And thus the masterpiece The Creator was created with a very low budget.

As they then enter the enemy territory, they discover that this weapon is an AI in the form of a child.
