The Starks of Winterfell also played a prominent role in Game of Thrones. Already 200 years before Ned Stark, the house was exceedingly powerful.
The Starks are one of the oldest noble families in Westeros, with a family tree that stretches back nearly 8,000 years. As a great house, they rule over the entire North, a very large and rugged region with even more rugged warriors.
Rank 3: House Hightower

House Hightower is one of the oldest, noblest, and most powerful houses in Westeros. They are primarily known for their intellect and good sense of strategy. They prefer to fight through political means before resorting to the sword.
Particularly strong is their connection to the Faith of the Seven, the predominant religion in Westeros. This is likely because their home is in Oldtown, where the center of the faith was long located.
Figures like Otto and Alicent Hightower illustrate well in House of the Dragon how much influence this old house can wield.

The Velaryons rule over Driftmark, the largest island in Blackwater Bay. They are of Valyrian descent and vassals of Dragonstone.
The house gained particular power and great wealth especially through its current head, Corlys Velaryon. He is also known as the “Sea Snake” and is considered one of the greatest explorers and captains of all time.
The Velaryons not only have one of the largest navies in all of Westeros. Among them, there are also frequently dragon riders. With that, they are undeniably one of the most powerful houses, second only to the Targaryens.
Rank 1: House Targaryen

House Targaryen is a house that one should not mess with. They originally come from ancient Valyria and are the only surviving dragonlords after its fall.
These dragons grant the Targaryens tremendous power, as should be clear since Aegon’s Conquest. Together with his two sister wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, and three dragons, Aegon I nearly managed to gain control over all of Westeros.
Even in the time of House of the Dragon, it is still dragons that represent the greatest power in the realm. Since the Targaryens control most of the dragons, they are also the most powerful house.
