In Game of Thrones and in the new prequel series House of the Dragon, it is mainly about political power games, intrigues, and betrayal. The various houses compete for the greatest influence. But which of these houses is actually the most powerful during the time of Rhaenyra, Daemon, and company?
What are houses? On the continent Westeros, there are many different noble houses. The most powerful of them are called Great Houses. They are only subordinate to the king on the Iron Throne and wield considerable power over their territories and vassals.
These vassals are often referred to as Small Houses, meaning lower nobility.
How was the ranking created? In our ranking, we ask which of the numerous houses is the most powerful during the time of House of the Dragon. Key factors include:
- Military power
- Political power
- Great achievements
Attention Spoiler: There are spoilers up to and including Season 2, Episode 7 of House of the Dragon.
Rank 10: House Strong
- Seat: Harrenhal
- Head: Larys Strong
- Motto: unknown
- Coat of Arms: Three pillars in blue, red, and green on a white background
Although Harrenhal was almost completely destroyed by dragon flames, it is still the largest fortress in Westeros. This is the seat of House Strong, a Small House that is loyal to the Tullys.
The Strongs possess considerable wealth and politically play a role time and again. Lord Lyonel Strong was Master of Laws and even Hand of the King to Viserys I. However, in Season 1, he was murdered alongside his eldest son Harwin by his younger son Larys “Clubfoot” Strong.
Since then, Larys has been the head of the house and weaves his intrigues in the Small Council.
Rank 9: House Tully
- Seat: Riverrun
- Head: Oskar Tully
- Motto: Family, Duty, Honor
- Coat of Arms: A leaping silver trout on a red and blue background
House Tully is one of the Great Houses of Westeros. While they are not overly rich or powerful, they have ruled the Riverlands for many generations.
Following the “surprising” death of Grover Tully, the young Oskar is now the head of the house. Despite his young age, he rightly reprimands Daemon, who relies on the support of the Riverlords.
While the Tullys themselves never ruled as kings, they often made advantageous marriages with members of powerful houses.
