In HotS you can pick up some tricks from Overwatch and additionally distribute free heroes to all players.
A free character for every player
During GamesCom, some news about Heroes of the Storm was released, especially regarding the upcoming “Machines of War” event, which will be themed around StarCraft. Not only will the two new heroes Alarak (StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void) and Zarya (Overwatch) come into play, but also two new maps. However, apart from these “big” changes, players can look forward to some goodies. For instance, there is a free hero for every player of Heroes of the Storm – whether new or veteran.
Although the following information should be taken with caution, as it may change before the actual release, these are the current plans:
All players can choose a hero from Tyrande, Anub’arak, and Thrall that they would like to have. If the player already owns one or more of these heroes, there are 3 “backup” heroes offered as alternatives instead. If the player also owns all these backups, they will instead receive a gold amount (exact value still unknown).

Furthermore, a popular feature from Overwatch seems to be getting implemented in Heroes of the Storm. In the future, players will be shown various “cards” at the end of a match, which list the performance of some teammates and opponents. Subsequently, all players can vote on which hero was most important for the team’s success. Similar to Overwatch, this will probably not have any real “benefit,” but will be a purely prestige event.
On a screenshot from monthius, some of these categories can already be seen:
- Highest damage to objective (Immortals)
- Longest kill streak
- Highest contribution to team hero damage
- Highest contribution to team structure damage
- MVP (Most Valuable Player)
There will surely be more categories, such as healing done or damage blocked, which just don’t appear in the mentioned example.
