In June 2020, Twitch permanently banned the well-known streamer Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm without giving any reasons. The Twitch streamer himself has never really clarified the background of the ban. Now a new theory is making the rounds in March 2021.
What was the ban about? Dr Disrespect had been a successful Twitch streamer for years:
- In March 2020, the Doc even signed an exclusive contract worth several million with the platform. The contract is rumored to have been very lucrative.
- But in June 2020, Twitch suddenly banned the streamer from the platform. This also terminated the contract.
There were numerous theories about the reasons – ranging from a PR gag to a business decision to a crime. However, to this day, no one knows exactly why DrDisrespect was permanently banned from Twitch.
Recently, things had been a bit quieter regarding the separation, but now a new, hot rumor is causing a stir again.
Dr Disrespect is a character portrayed by streamer Guy Beahm, who previously worked as a community manager and map designer for Call of Duty. As Doc, Beahm broke through on Twitch in 2017. In the following years, he became one of the most important faces and poster boys of the streaming platform until he was banned in June 2020 and has since been streaming on YouTube.
Voice Actor from Call of Duty has connections to Twitch
Where does the rumor come from? The statements come from Jeff Leach, the voice actor of Ghost from Call of Duty. Leach recently spoke with Dan Allen on his YouTube channel DanAllenGaming about his role as Ghost. Allen’s channel is known for its interviews with various members of the “Call of Duty” cast.
During the conversation, they also talked about the ban of Dr Disrespect. Leach mentioned a rumor that he claims to have heard “from people who work at Twitch.” You can watch it in the video here:
DrDisrespect allegedly deceived Twitch with a false Mixer offer
This is supposedly the reason for DrDisrespect’s ban from Twitch: According to Leach, it was about the negotiations of the exclusive contract between DrDisrespect and Twitch, which were concluded in March.
Apparently, the Doc used an offer from the streaming service Mixer as leverage against Twitch to negotiate a better contract for himself. This was a difficult situation for Twitch, as they had already lost Twitch streamers Shroud and Ninja to Mixer.
Apparently, Twitch gave the Doctor a higher contract than originally intended to prevent him from leaving.
After a few months later, in June 2020, Mixer announced its shutdown, Twitch concluded that Dr Disrespect must have lied about the Mixer offer. It is very unlikely that a dying platform would offer a star a huge deal just before its shutdown.
According to the rumor, the ban resulted from a too risky negotiation tactic and a failed trickery on the part of the Doc. Subsequently, Twitch allegedly severed all ties and refused to continue working with Dr Disrespect.
Apparently, Twitch was disappointed with DrDisrespect: They had built him up to be a star on the platform and made him the “poster boy” of Twitch – now, after he lied to Twitch and had no other option after Mixer shut down, they said: “Okay, then goodbye,” Leach reports.
By the way, Dr Disrespect himself hinted that it must have been about money – even though he believed that Twitch wanted to replace him with a younger, cheaper talent.
Another theory that the ban of DrDisrespect is related to the end of Mixer has been around since July 2020: At that time, a lawyer explained that DrDisrespect’s ban might stem from Twitch considering his contract “no longer marketable” after they lost their financially strong rival Mixer. In this theory, the misconduct was solely Twitch’s fault.
Note: This is just a rumor. Even if it may sound plausible – treat the whole thing with a pinch of caution. Because even the voice actor emphasizes that he cannot be 100% sure if the rumor is actually true – even though he assumes so.
