A new game aims to appeal to both Poker and Hearthstone fans. But can the concept of HoldemX succeed?
With all the buzz around Hearthstone, it’s easy to forget that there are still a whole lot of classic card games out there. Especially Poker in the “Texas Hold’em” variant is quite popular and ranks among the most played card games in online casinos.
Mediarex Sports & Entertainment now wants to bring both player groups together – or rather generate a particularly large pool of potential customers. The game HoldemX combines the typical game elements of Poker with additional card effects that players can use at specific times.
According to the developers, the game has been tested extensively since last October, during which they invited the most experienced poker players and interviewed top players from Hearthstone and Magic The Gathering. The reactions have been quite positive… or something like that. In the quote, it sounds like this:
“Since October, the mechanics of the game have been tested by dozens of the best poker players in the world, as well as some top players from Hearthstone and Magic The Gathering. We are thrilled by the reactions, which vary between: “Wow”, “Fun”, “mmm…”, “Crazy”, “Decent”, “Challenging”, “Confusing” and “:)”. We believe we have found the right foundation to build a great franchise that unites these two communities and establishes poker-based games as a viable eSport.”
Whether HoldemX can establish itself in the market remains to be seen. The idea is certainly interesting, but so far the game still feels very unrefined – and whether poker really needs another uncontrollable random element is debatable.
