Hogwarts Legacy has been highly anticipated by many “Harry Potter” fans. However, it is not suitable for everyone. At times, the action role-playing game is surprisingly dark. It is primarily about a success on Steam.
Even in the Harry Potter books and films, not everything is always peaceful and carefree. Especially in the later parts, the story becomes increasingly dark, and some of the beloved characters die.
Hogwarts Legacy also has its dark sides. However, we can choose whether we want to go to the good or evil side.
How does that work? Throughout the game, Hogwarts Legacy gives you the opportunity to learn the so-called Unforgivable Curses.
- Imperio gives one control over another person
- Crucio inflicts unspeakable pain
- Avada Kedavra leads to immediate death
And what success is this about? Such spells should not actually exist in Hogwarts. Player Severe_Risk_6839 also thinks so. On Reddit, he shares an image of his current task: “Torture a burning enemy.” For this, you have to use the torture curse Crucio on an enemy who is on fire. He writes in horror:
This is for dark wizards, not for students!

In the following trailer, you can see how your wizard navigates through Hogwarts:
Off to Azkaban! Or not?
The Unforgivable Curses have been banned since 1717, and their execution is punishable by life imprisonment in the wizarding prison Azkaban. However, in Hogwarts Legacy, you notice very little of this.
Are there consequences? Even if you freely use forbidden magic, you have nothing to fear. Your companions might make a comment, but they will quickly forget your misdeed.
And even if you attack a Hogwarts professor personally with the killing curse, there are no consequences.
Many players find that unfortunate. A morality system might have improved the game at this point.
Do I have to learn the curses? As mentioned earlier, the game only gives you the opportunity to learn the Unforgivable Curses. Many players fear that they will miss something if they refuse to engage with dark magic.
It is mainly about the Steam achievement Master of Spells. To unlock this achievement, “all” spells must be learned. For that reason, many players felt compelled to learn the dark spells as well. However, this is actually not necessary.
- The achievement is unlocked as soon as you have learned all spells except the Unforgivable Curses.
So you can completely freely decide whether your character should use dark magic or not. You do not have to fear significant advantages or disadvantages, no matter which path you choose.
If you don’t feel like doing dark tasks in Hogwarts Legacy, you can also just take a long walk through the magical village of Hogsmeade. There’s a lot to discover: In Hogwarts Legacy, there’s a magical shop that hides a cool secret – many players have never noticed it
