With The Day Before, an interesting shooter is currently in development, heavily reminiscent of The Division. It was originally supposed to be released at the end of June, but the developers have now announced that the date has been postponed to 2023. The shooter is expected to be released directly in Unreal Engine 5.
What kind of game is this? In The Day Before, you find yourself in a zombie apocalypse, trying to survive. These plague zombies are not giant monsters but simply brainless, drowsy creatures eager to feast on your flesh.
The shooter offers some interesting elements and looks really good in the initial trailers:
- You need to search for food, weapons, and resources in the game.
- There is a cover system, similar to what you know from The Division.
- There are weather effects that should impact the game experience.
- You can drive around in vehicles, with mud splashing beautifully everywhere.
- You are in constant danger, as other players can also attack you besides the zombies.
It was one of the most promising shooters for the year 2022.
When will the game be released? The release of The Day Before was originally announced for June 21, 2022. However, the developers announced on May 5 that the date would be postponed – and quite significantly.
The Day Before is now scheduled to release on March 1, 2023. The release is planned for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
A first glimpse into the game is provided by this gameplay video:
Millions are looking forward to the shooter, which is why the developers want to get everything right
What do the developers justify the postponement with? In an official statement, it is said that “millions of players” have added The Day Before to their wishlist on Steam. This makes it one of the most anticipated games on Valve’s platform.
To avoid disappointing these players, the developers want to take more time and perfect the shooter.
With the postponement, The Day Before will also get a new engine, the Unreal Engine 5. This should provide new technical possibilities.
How is the postponement received? The Day Before has been viewed critically by many because it is being developed by an indie studio and looked almost too good to be true in the trailers. Many criticized that the shown gameplay had seemed too scripted so far and that the developers generally showed too little of their game.
They were also skeptical because the game was supposed to be released in June but has not yet provided an alpha or beta for playtesting.
The postponement now brings two reactions:
- Some players see this postponement as an opportunity to actually implement the shooter as the developers intended. They welcome the postponement.
- Others feel confirmed that the developers cannot deliver the game they presented.
What will ultimately be confirmed will likely be revealed by March 1, 2023 at the earliest.
What do you think about the postponement? Are you disappointed or did you expect something like this because there have been no playtesting opportunities so far?
