For years, MMORPG fans have been hoping for the release of Throne and Liberty. The developers NCSoft have postponed the action MMORPG to 2023. Previously, the game was known as Lineage 3, Lineage Eternal, and Project TL.
NCSoft began development of the MMORPG back in 2011. At that time, it was supposed to be called Lineage Eternal, but the publisher didn’t find it suitable and took it offline completely in 2017. In development, it is said to have already cost more than 75 million euros.
Open world, no fixed classes, and plenty of story
What do we know about Throne and Liberty? In an interview, the developers have already revealed some details about the gameplay:
- The game world is supposed to be completely open. You will encounter massive world bosses there.
- The story of the game is in focus. There will be an overarching storyline that is meant to explain to the player what they are actually fighting for, as well as individual stories for each area.
- There will be various ways to move, such as climbing or flying.
- Sieges of castles will play an important role. In the endgame, large PvP battles will be the focus of the MMORPG.
- The day-night cycle is important, as some monsters only appear at night.
- PvE will play a significant role with quests, bosses, and dungeons.
- There are many contents that you will have to tackle together with other players. Guilds will therefore be important.

What do we know about classes and combat system?
- There are only humans as playable races. However, during combat, you will also be able to transform into animals.
- The combat system is supposed to be similar to that in Blade & Soul, meaning very action-packed.
- There are no fixed classes, instead, you equip two weapons that determine your playstyle. You can level up and enhance these weapons later. At the same time, your character will level up in the traditional manner.
- There will be no classic Holy Trinity of tank, healer, and DD.
Release also for PS5 and Xbox Series X
You can play Throne and Liberty not only on PC, but also on PS5 and Xbox. Thus, it will be the first new major console MMORPG since Black Desert, which was released for consoles in 2019.
There will be no crossplay between PC and consoles. The developers justify this by stating that simultaneous patches on the platforms are complicated. Additionally, they find it unfair since some platforms may have advantages over others.
When exactly will the MMORPG be released? Only in 2023; we don’t know more specifics yet. The release is intended to be worldwide, but it might be delayed on consoles as the manufacturers need to review and approve the version.
What will it cost? Throne and Liberty is expected to follow a Free2Play or Buy2Play model. In any case, there will be a shop. NCSoft promises that this will not involve Pay2Win. They want the efforts of players to be rewarded. However, players who only play a few hours a week should be able to catch up through the shop.
