It may surprise you, but: Halloween is just around the corner. To celebrate, for instance, you can dress up as a ghost and throw eggs against house walls, or, even better, compete in a friendly PVP duel in a scare game like here in Hide and Shriek! It has recently become free to play.
Hide and Shriek was released by the developer and publisher Funcom back in Halloween 2016 and has so far received mostly positive user reviews on Steam. No wonder: Funcom has proven its expertise in horror elements with The Secret World.
The fact that Hide and Shriek “just so happens” to take place in the same universe as Secret World Legends is the icing on the cake. So let’s take a closer look at this lesser-known gem.
At night, you sneak through the lonely school as an invisible entity. The goal: to scare your opponent to death in the literal sense. For this purpose, you set traps, use spells, and create jump scares; for example, by positioning yourself in strategically advantageous spots and, preferably adorned with a mask of Donald Trump, jumping out at your opponent or screaming at them.
Of course, you must not be discovered yourself and should collect as many points and runes as possible. At the end of the ten-minute duel, these could be extremely important! The horror trip is particularly fun with a friend, with the curtains drawn and wearing headphones.

Of course, I couldn’t resist and took my first steps into the high school of horror myself. I really like the graphics, and the atmosphere is well conveyed, as long as you’re not talking about unicorns via Teamspeak. Personally, I would wish for more maps for longer-lasting fun. Overall, it’s a really delightful game for the darkening season! And: Finally, I can scare friends from my old home without having to take the train!
