This went horribly wrong: The developers of the MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online released a new update, which was immediately reverted. But why?
The new Update 21 introduced, among other things, new equipment that was apparently offered too cheaply. Of course, players jumped at it, hoping to snag a bargain. But no such luck. The developers immediately reverted Update 21 when they noticed the mistake and removed the already purchased items from the players’ inventories.
Players left empty-handed
As compensation, there was: nothing.
However, many players had sold old items or dismantled them to quickly acquire the new equipment. There was no compensation for this either. The items are simply gone – tough luck. To make matters worse, the new prices for the newly introduced items have now been announced. They are four times higher than before!
More grinding instead of less
This brings an additional problem: While the developers previously stated that they wanted to minimize grinding so that it would not take as long to acquire new items, the high prices have now made grinding even worse.
It now takes significantly longer to gather the money for the equipment. Accordingly, players are expressing their displeasure in the official forum of the MMORPG. They feel cheated.
The problems were known in advance
Additionally, the community is frustrated that those who were able to test the update in advance had already alerted the developers to the problems – but nothing happened. And now exactly what the testers feared has come true. With the current update to the MMORPG LotRO, quite a few things have gone wrong…
