Hero’s Song has come to an end. The retro MMORPG will never be released.
A bitter Christmas surprise for fans of the studio Pixelmage Games and its game “Hero’s Song”: it will never be released. The studio will dissolve.
This bitter news comes from John Smedley. He was formerly the head of SOE and involved in the development of MMORPGs like Everquest and Star Wars Galaxies before going independent. Some of his former colleagues who had worked on H1Z1 had switched to Pixelmage in the last few months.
The company is now shutting down. There simply isn’t enough money to continue development. Smedley said they knew that most startups fail. However, the studio had hoped to be an exception. That is not the case.
Smedley emphasizes that all backers should receive their money back. They should contact Pixelmage Games via email. Players who purchased Hero’s Song through Steam can request a refund to get their money back.
It breaks my heart to have to do this…
Recently, fans had feared that something like this might happen. There had been a lot of silence around the game. Smedley had assured that it was normal, for an indie studio to spend a lot of time raising funds. Smedley was the studio head for the now-canceled Everquest Next. He had also assured before the project was canceled that EQ Next was not vaporware and would blow everyone away.
On Twitter, Smedley announced the decision with the words: “It breaks my heart to have to do this.”
Things haven’t been going too well lately for Smedley’s former studio, Daybreak Games:
