A player in Final Fantasy XIV was faced with a huge challenge. The hero was to eat 999 eggs in one go, for which he was celebrated by the players of the Marlboro server.
That online gamers are often up for any nonsense is a well-known fact. Whether it’s about praising ugly pets or holding parades with fat cats, there’s everything. A FFXIV player recently experienced this firsthand.
999 eggs? What? Ross O’Donovan (via Twitter) is actually an Australian animator and voice actor. But for a few hours, he became the hero that Eorzea needed in the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV.
Instead of venturing into the wilderness like any other adventurer and completing quests for NPCs, he received a task that changed his life.

When he logged in to the city of Limsa Lominsa, a mysterious stranger handed him 999 boiled eggs and told Ross to eat them. And he did. For over an hour, he stuffed himself with boiled eggs in the game, and his dedication to the welfare of the world did not go unnoticed by the players around him.
Over time, a growing group of players gathered around him. The spectators cheered him on with emotes and fireworks. The battle against the boiled eggs was so intense that Ross had to switch hands because he was experiencing pain from the constant clicking.
Ross documented his heroic feat on Twitter, where he regularly posted updates with screenshots and videos of his progress. The original tweet has since received over 9,300 likes and has been retweeted over 2,000 times.
Ross celebrated his victory over the eggs in true Final Fantasy spirit with a victory fanfare.

Number 1 FFXIV Stream on Twitch
But his fight against the boiled eggs was not over yet. To make the “strange” year 2020 a little stranger, he decided to eat 2020 boiled eggs in his next stream. Which he did.
When he surpassed the 300-egg mark, his stream had the most viewers on Twitch in the FFXIV category. Again, a large crowd of players gathered around Ross to support him in his fight against the 2020 eggs. Some even ate in solidarity with him.
Ross also accompanied this adventure on Twitter with videos. You can watch the complete heroic feat on his streaming channel (via Twitch from about 4:30:00)

Why is this special? The news that a guy is celebrated by the community for eating 999 and later 2020 eggs may sound pretty crazy to many. But it also shows an important aspect of online gaming.
With his completely pointless action, Ross demonstrated once again that MMORPGs are not always just about content and kills, but also about the community. When players come together, they can have fun even with the most ridiculous things, and that’s what matters.
If the legendary battle against boiled eggs has sparked your interest in Final Fantasy XIV, you can now play the MMORPG for free up to level 60.
