Portgas D. Ace
Who is he? Portgas D. Ace was not only the commander of the 2nd division of the Whitebeard Pirates but also the son of Gol D. Roger, the King of the Pirates. However, instead of being proud of his heritage, Ace felt nothing but hatred for his father throughout his life – and deep in his heart, he always doubted whether he even had the right to exist.
Ace was born under special circumstances. His mother, Portgas D. Rouge, carried him for an incredible 20 months in her womb to protect him from the World Government. But her sacrifice was in vain: as soon as he was born, he became a target simply because he was the son of Gol D. Roger. His mother died shortly after his birth, and Ace was raised by Garp.
Why is his fate so sad? Ace was searching for a place where he belonged. After a long time as a pirate, he finally joined Edward “Whitebeard” Newgate, who accepted him not only as his commander but as his son. However, when Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) killed one of his crewmates, Ace set out to punish him. However, he lost the fight against Blackbeard and was captured by the Marines.
The entire World Government wanted to see his blood to finally eradicate Roger’s bloodline. Therefore, he was publicly sentenced to execution in Marineford. But Luffy and Whitebeard actually managed to rescue Ace. However, when Admiral Akainu tried to pierce Luffy with his magma fist, Ace threw himself in front of his brother protectively and took the fatal blow himself. He died in Luffy’s arms – and with his death, the great war of Marineford that was fought for his rescue came to a tragic end.
