How were the characters chosen? Luffy has fought against numerous opponents, but some are simply a bit cooler than others. Whether it’s due to their strength, character development, or unique presence – these five enemies stood out from the crowd and left a lasting impression.
When selecting the characters, three central criteria were considered:
- Characters that you like to remember
- Interesting personality
- Strong influence on the plot (i.e., the story’s action was significantly driven forward)
Here is the opening to the latest arc in the One Piece anime, the Egghead Island Arc:
Crocodile
Who is this? Crocodile is the former president of the Baroque Works, a secret criminal organization, and was a Shichibukai. His Devil Fruit belongs to the Logia type and is the Sand Fruit. Because of it, he is immune to most attacks as his body simply dissolves into sand.
His grand appearance takes place in the Alabasta Saga, where he attempts to take over the kingdom of Alabasta. There he encounters Luffy, who wants to stop him.
Luffy loses twice against Crocodile before finally defeating him on the third attempt. Crocodile was one of the first opponents to challenge Luffy to his limits.
Why is Crocodile so cool? Crocodile is one of the coolest antagonists in One Piece, and for several reasons:
- He is the first Shichibukai that Luffy encounters.
- His Sand-Sand Fruit is the first Logia fruit that Luffy can defeat.
- Through him, we meet Nico Robin for the first time.
- He sets the plot regarding the ancient weapons in motion by searching for Pluton – our first glimpse into the hidden history of the world.
Crocodile’s abilities, his cunning personality, and his ruthless nature have made him an unforgettable opponent. But what makes him even more interesting is his later development.
He reappears in Impel Down. But this time not as Luffy’s enemy, but as an unexpected ally, creating a completely new dynamic between them. One could almost say that they could become something like friends someday.
