5. Akatsuki no Yona: Princess of the Dawn
What is it about? The story centers on Princess Yona, who leads a carefree life in the Kingdom of Kouka until her father is suddenly murdered one day. Fleeing from the new rulers, she is protected by her loyal bodyguard Son Hak.
They learn of an ancient legend: Once, the Red Dragon King ruled the land, accompanied by four warriors chosen to possess dragon powers. These powers were passed down through generations, and their descendants still exist today.
To save her kingdom, Yona embarks on a dangerous journey to find the descendants of these dragons.
What makes the anime special? The interesting aspect of Akatsuki no Yona is the concept of dragon body parts. Each of the warriors Yona meets on her journey embodies only a specific part of the dragon heritage – whether it’s superhuman strength through the arm of the White Dragon, paralyzing eyes from the Blue Dragon, or superior jumping power from the Green Dragon.
The anime takes its time to carefully introduce the characters and build a connection with them. Each of the dragon warriors brings their own past, worries, and dreams, making them very tangible and endearing.
