The unfortunate franchise Hellgate London simply refuses to die.
Hellgate: London is a monument in gaming history. It was kind of a wet dream, a mix of Diablo and a first-person shooter from a studio founded by Blizzard veterans. This had to turn out well! Let’s make it short: It didn’t. It was quite a flop.
Since the actual game was discontinued in 2009, the rights have gone to a company in South Korea. There, a remake was set up, and a second part was also supposed to be developed. However, the development of Hellgate 2 was already discontinued in 2014. The remake survived relatively long, until it ended in 2016.
Hellgate is supposed to return – The two versions could hardly be more different
Now the game is set to be revived on two fronts.
- A community has gathered to release a “Hellgate Revival“, a multiplayer reboot, called London 2038. It is a fan project and is supposed to be completely free. You should never have to buy anything, never be able to spend money. It is a child of pure passion. On this page, the developers keep fans updated. Currently, they are inviting to an alpha.
- Hanbit, in turn, plans “Hellgate: London VR” and has completed the first focus group test in South Korea. The game is set to be released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One and is expected to hit the market early in 2018. It is planned as a futuristic shooter being developed with Unreal Engine 4. Players should be able to fully immerse themselves in a gruesome version of the Hellgate universe. They take on the role of a hero tasked with protecting the Templar Jessica from demons. There is no information yet about a version for Europe and North America.
