A major update has fans rushing to the servers of Helldivers 2. The player count has doubled on Steam, but when you take a closer look at the reasons for the increase in players, there is no reason to celebrate.
Why are fans rushing the servers? The latest update “Heart of Democracy” was recently released, and it mainly revolves around the invasion of the Illuminati. A few days ago, the aliens teleported their entire armada to the doorstep of Over-Earth and now, with the update, they have even dared to directly invade the home planet of humanity.
There is a valid reason why many former Helldivers are now returning to establish justice and order in the name of democracy. The fate of humanity lies in the hands of the players, and if they fail, the consequences could be unimaginable.
The Helldivers could soon lose everything
Why do players need to give their all now? Helldivers is structured in campaigns. A campaign starts fresh with the conflict of one of the three alien factions and stretches until Over-Earth wins or loses. However, it currently looks like humanity is losing.
The Illuminati are currently carrying out their invasion with unimaginable war machines and mutated creatures. Civilians are trying to save themselves while Helldivers, alongside SEAF units, hold the lines and make the aliens feel the combined power of democracy.
Before the invasion, up to 80,000 players fought during peak times, and since the new update was released, the current 24-hour peak is at 163,581 players simultaneously (via steamdb.info) and that’s just on Steam – with PlayStation players, there are even more Helldivers.
So it’s a good thing that so many active heroes are trying to protect Over-Earth. If the Helldivers are successful, they might have a chance to win the war.
But if that isn’t the case, the campaign would end and start over, with a war progression that will be newly created by Joel by then.
