Blizzard has announced a new expansion for Hearthstone. The first new cards and the general setting reveal: the Witchwood will be spooky!
A few days ago, the developers of Hearthstone ventured into the woods to “discover something new” – now they have returned! In a parody of the film “Blair Witch Project,” we see the developers navigating through a spooky forest while bringing all sorts of new information about the upcoming Hearthstone expansion: The Witchwood.
The Witchwood is actually a region in World of Warcraft on the Highmountain where Harpies abound. However, in Hearthstone, it seems to draw more inspiration from Gilneas and enchanted forests from that area. There are all sorts of ghosts, creepy creatures lurking in the shadows, and of course, plenty of Worgen. The setting is eerie, and that is reflected in the design of the cards.

The Witchwood brings a number of new keywords that can be found on some cards.
- Game Start: Effects of these cards are triggered at the start of a match, regardless of whether the card is in the player’s hand.
- Rush: Minions with Rush can attack on the turn they are played – but only enemy minions.
- Echo: A card with Echo can be played any number of times within the same turn, as long as the mana costs can be paid.
Some cards have also been introduced by the developers, such as Genn Greymane, the leader of the Gilnean Worgen in World of Warcraft.
