Hearthstone: The first new boss has a drunken army

More and more is being revealed about the third expansion and thus the second adventure “Blackrock Mountain” for Blizzard’s card game Hearthstone. Some people have now been able to play a preview version, where they got to take on the first boss, Coren Direbrew, in both normal and heroic mode.

In normal mode: Easy to counter

Since Coren is the first boss of the expansion, they didn’t want to make him too difficult. This is reflected in his hero power, which triggers at the beginning of each of his turns: Both players summon a random minion from their decks into play. The solution to this is, of course, relatively simple: You fill your deck exclusively with expensive minions. In particular, Ragnaros, the various giants, and various other cards with mana costs between 7 and 10 should lead to a quick victory. Most likely, you won’t even have to change the current decks – after all, it is supposed to be just an easy introduction fight.

In heroic mode: Difficult and challenging

As soon as you want to face the dark iron dwarf and his bar in heroic mode, you will be confronted with a real problem. Coren’s hero power now summons two random minions from his deck and only one from your own. Even relatively strong cards could quickly be overwhelmed by the sheer number of opponents. As if that weren’t bad enough, the boss also has 15 additional armor points, which will probably stifle any quick “rush down” attempt. There will surely be numerous strategies to overcome this challenge – in my mind, a mage deck is already forming, aimed at the simple “fatigue” of the boss. Because anyone who plays two random minions each turn and draws another card should have no cards left in their deck after about 9 turns.

If Blizzard adheres to the relatively young tradition of the Naxxramas bosses, we will probably have a lot of fun with the heroic bosses, and even Hearthstone experts will be pushed to their limits. At least until one searches for a functional deck from the internet.
