When the new Hearthstone champion wants to show his trophy, it breaks into two pieces. Cheap quality or intentional?
When it comes to Hearthstone esports, there have been enough negative reports and protests in recent days and weeks. A small mishap at the “Hearthstone Championship” tournament now seamlessly joins in.
Because the champion’s trophy broke seconds after he received it. Or is it not such a big deal?
What happened? The Canadian player Eddie Lui was able to defeat his opponent Lo Tsz Kin and thus take home the prize money of $95,000, along with the title of “Bucharest Master Tour Champion”. When he receives his trophy ceremonially, the joy is great – at least for a moment.
During the award ceremony, a small camera shot shows Eddie Lui with the trophy, wanting to lift it up to hold it high – right then it “breaks” into two pieces and one half falls to the ground.
Eddie Lui seems to take it with humor and laughs amusedly. The commentators are shocked for a moment, but then they too start laughing and assure that it will be “fixed”, yet they just can’t stop finding it amusing. You can see the relevant part in this video (at 01:53:56):
Blizzard says: The trophy consists of 2 pieces
This is what Blizzard says: Kotaku has requested a response from Blizzard regarding the incident and has also received one. It states that this is indeed intentional, as the trophy consists of two parts.
One is the “star” that rests on the base and the base itself. This is designed so that winners can transport the trophy more easily.
Why neither the player nor the commentators knew this, however, remains questionable.
By the way, Hearthstone is currently having major issues on mobile.
In the end, the situation is probably not as dramatic as perceived by the people in the stream. It is probably not a “cheap trophy” that breaks in the winner’s hands, but rather just an object consisting of two separate parts.
