Blizzard has won a lawsuit against a Chinese copycat: they had brazenly copied the logo, design, and concept of Hearthstone .
As mmoculture reports, Blizzard and NetEase have prevailed in a court in Shanghai. The China-based developer “Unico” must cease distributing the game “Legends of Crouching Dragon”. Furthermore, they must financially compensate both Blizzard and the Chinese publisher of Hearthstone, NetEase.
Recently, mmoculture further reports, Chinese copycats and plagiarists are increasingly facing consequences. Other publishers have also legally acted against such practices. Recently we reported on a similar case where a Chinese company released a “Real-Life” version of Hearthstone, likely without Blizzard’s consent.
The card game “Legend of Crouching Dragon” is (or now better was) ironically a mobile game for iOS and Android. Blizzard is currently working on the port for the original itself. According to earlier reports from mmoculture, the “clone” includes about 800 cards and pads Blizzard’s concept with some elements from the world of “A Romance of Three Kingdoms”. The eponymous novel also provides the material for the “Dynasty Warriors” series.
According to reports from January 2014, Blizzard and NetEase had sued Unico for about 1.6 million US dollars back then. The amount that was ultimately settled is not known.
