With Un’goro, a lot changes in Hearthstone . The new minion type “Elementals” brings its own mechanics.
With “Journey to Un’Goro”, Hearthstone not only gets new mechanics and quest cards but also a new type of minion. After there have been mechs, dragons, pirates, beasts, and murlocs, another category is joining in: Elementals.
Many Elementals come with a new mechanic, similar to the dragons and dragon allies. Elementals trigger certain effects when an Elemental was played in the previous turn.
An example of this is the legendary minion Ozruk. For each Elemental that was played in the previous round, he gains 5 additional health points via Battlecry.
Another example is the shaman minion Stone Guardian, who summons 2 additional Elementals with 2/3 and Taunt when an Elemental was played in the previous round.
To ensure there are enough Elementals, some cards will be retroactively renamed to Elementals that were introduced in previous expansions. The following cards will be retroactively “converted” to Elementals:
- Water Elemental
- Anomalus
- Ragnaros the Lightlord
- Lightspawn
- Dust Devil
- Unleashed Elemental
- Burning Warlord
- Rumbling Elemental
- Earth Elemental
- Fire Elemental
- Neptulon
- Al’Akir the Windlord
- Arcane Anomaly
- Icecaller
- Magma Wielder
- Frost Elemental
- Baron Geddon
- Ragnaros the Firelord
Additionally, all Elementals from the expansion “Journey to Un’goro” will come.
However, it was a long road for the developers to get to the mechanics of the Elementals. They had many other ideas that were ultimately discarded:
- Elementals should receive a bonus when a spell is cast in the round.
- Elementals receive a bonus when you control another Elemental.
There was even a completely new resource, the “Elemental Charge”, which was envisioned to work like additional mana and could be used for certain Elementals.
