The Hearthstone pro Chung “Blitzchung” Ng Wai was suspended by Blizzard. After a political statement about the situation in Hong Kong, he was stripped of his Grandmaster status, had his prize money revoked, and received a one-year ban.
What did “Blitzchung” do? Chung “Blitzchung” Ng Wai is one of the best Hearthstone players and holds the Grandmaster status. Only 48 players worldwide have this.
In an interview during the Asia Pacific Hearthstone Grandmasters livestream after a match, he shouted: “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our age!” He was wearing a gas mask and ski goggles.
The two casters ducked under the table when he began to speak, giggling at the same time.
What is the background? Since June, many residents of Hong Kong have been protesting against a new law that provides for the extradition of criminals to mainland China. Many fear that this will undermine Hong Kong’s independence.
Although the implementation of the law has been postponed, many residents of Hong Kong continue to protest for more independence.
Blizzard takes action
What was the consequence of “Blitzchung’s” action? Blizzard took the livestream offline and stated that Chung Ng Wai violated Hearthstone rules. The concerns revolve around Section 6.1 of the “Hearthstone Grandmasters Official Competition Rules”. According to this rule, Grandmasters cannot make statements that would bring the player, the game, or Blizzard into disrepute.
The penalties are:
- Blizzard revoked “Blitzchung’s” Grandmaster status
- Blizzard will withhold all his prize money for Season 2
- Furthermore, he may not participate in Hearthstone tournaments for one year – from October 5, 2019, to October 5, 2020
Additionally, the collaboration with the two casters/hosts who interviewed “Blitzchung” has been terminated, even though they did not address the political statement and even displayed advertisements directly.
Blizzard states that they respect players’ opinions, but those who represent the company must adhere to the rules.
What does “Blitzchung” think about it? The player explains that he was well aware of the potential consequences of his statements in the livestream. Yet he stands by his opinion. Even if it now poses a threat to his life. He feels obligated to speak out about the political situation in Hong Kong.
What do players think about the situation? There is heated discussion about the penalty that “Blitzchung” received on Reddit. Most players support Chung Ng Wai and consider Blizzard’s reaction to be exaggerated. Even in Blizzard’s official forum, there are calls for solidarity with “Blitzchung”.
