The old god C’thun will not be playable in the Hearthstone Arena. Find out here the reasons for that.
Last March, the authors from Hearthpwn and some other Hearthstone sites had the opportunity to talk with the game’s developers, Ben Brode and Yong Woo, about the upcoming expansion. We have written down and translated the most interesting statements for you.
No C’thun cards in the Arena
Upon the launch of the expansion, all players will receive the old god C’thun as a gift. However, this old god will not appear in the Arena – and neither will all his cultists. The reason for this is that it is quite unlikely to get a specific legendary card in an Arena deck, and C’thun is no exception.
According to the developers, it would feel unsatisfying to draw many cultists in the Arena (and perhaps only be able to choose from them) without ever having the old god in play. To avoid this frustration, C’thun and his associated cultists are completely excluded from this game mode.
Dark gods with a cheerful tavern atmosphere
A special challenge the developers saw was to combine the theme of the old gods with the rather casual environment of Hearthstone. Since the old gods are quite cruel creatures that wanted to destroy, subjugate, and pervert life, it wasn’t easy to blend this dark atmosphere with the cheerful tavern nights. This is precisely why they are quite proud of the cinematic that only scratches the surface of the theme.
“This one somewhat eerie person in the dark corner of the tavern,” referring to the troll fortune teller, bridges the perfect connection between the dark theme and the cheerful “Well, that’s just superstition” atmosphere.
No new keywords or races
It has already become clear in the recent releases of cards, but The Whispering of the Old Gods will not introduce any new races (Murloc, Dragon, Beast, etc.) and furthermore will not contain any new keyword (Battlecry, Taunt, etc.).
However, to ensure that it doesn’t get boring, there have already been some very creative forms of Battlecry seen in recent days. The closer one gets to the release, the more precise information they want to provide about what they thought of the individual card effects.
