It takes a while for a card for HearthStone to be truly finished. The “Blackwing Technician” is the perfect example of this, as there were a total of 10 different versions of her before she looked like we know her today.
Initially, she was supposed to be a hybrid card that gains +2/+2 each time the player draws a Mech or a Dragon. This gave the opponent some information about their own hand. However, the developers were not satisfied and decided to reserve such hybrids for set expansions that include a large number of cards. Nevertheless, we do not want to withhold some of the most interesting card texts that the Technician had for a short time during the development process:
- Deathrattle: Gain a mana crystal.
- Battlecry: Reveal a random dragon from your hand and gain health equal to its cost.
- At the end of your turn, give a random friendly dragon Taunt, Divine Shield, or Windfury (random selection).
Pretty funny effects, right? So it can be assumed that the developers are far from running out of ideas.
“Bluffing” is set to become more important in the future
A mechanic that has so far been very rare in HearthStone, but is actually essential for card games, is set to gain more weight: bluffing. But how can one bluff in an online game when they cannot see the opponent’s eyes?
There are great mechanics for this, such as that of the Voidcaller. When he is defeated, the warlock immediately plays a demon from their hand. Often, the respective player has no demon in hand, and the Voidcaller survives many turns in which he could have easily died. Such mechanics are what they want to continue to expand in order to enable new mind games. We can look forward to what the next expansions will offer.
