The new expansion “Whispers of the Old Gods” for Hearthstone has been announced. We have all the details on the first cards.
The Old Gods Corrupt the Cards
Today, on March 11, 2016, the next expansion for Hearthstone was revealed during the livestream. It is named “Whispers of the Old Gods” and will include 143 new cards. “Whispers of the Old Gods” is heavily inspired by its counterpart from World of Warcraft, and you can see this reflected in the cards. Many of the “new” cards are variations of corrupted and twisted versions of already known minions. Three examples were provided.
The “Loot Hoarder” becomes the Polluted Hoarder – Mana cost and values are simply doubled.
The “Ancient Healbot” becomes the Corrupted Healbot, a powerful minion for 5 mana with decent stats of 6/6. However, his deathrattle heals the enemy hero for 8 health points.
Lastly, there is the altered version of the “Doomsayer”. He has finally been right with his statement that “the end is here”. The Validated Doomsayer costs 5 mana and has stats of 0/7. However, at the beginning of your turn, his attack power is increased to 7!
C’thun – an Old God Growing Stronger
The “centerpiece” of the expansion is likely the legendary card C’thun, one of the Old Gods. It costs a hefty 10 mana, has meager stats of 6/6, and the battlecry “Deal damage equal to this minion’s attack to all enemies. The damage is randomly distributed among all enemies.”
The catch is: 16 other cards in the expansion that various cultists interact with C’thun, even before he appears on the battlefield! Two examples were mentioned, the “Beckoner of Evil” and the “Twilight Elder.” Both give C’thun additional stats – regardless of whether C’thun is on the battlefield, in your hand, or still in the deck. Thus, C’thun gradually becomes more powerful, as does his battlecry.
C’thun is Free – 3 Card Packs Too
The best for last: With the first pack you open from the new expansion, you will not only receive 5 random cards, but also C’thun for free! All players who log in during the release period will also receive 3 free card packs and can get started right away. However, a lot of time will pass before that happens. The release date is not set until late April or early May.
Anyone who pre-orders 50 card packs of the new expansion starting this coming Monday (March 14, 2016) will also secure the gruesome C’thun card back.
