While Larian Studios achieved a huge success with Baldur’s Gate 3 the studio wants to move away from the world of Dungeons & Dragons with its future projects and instead focus on original ideas. Now, Hasbro has to find out what the possible future of Baldur’s Gate could look like.
What is the future of Baldur’s Gate? The rights to the brand and games related to D&D have been owned by the American company Hasbro since April 2022. In a conversation with IGN at the Game Developers Conference 2025, Hasbro’s senior vice president for digital games revealed that they are thinking about the future of Baldur’s Gate and are developing plans that they could discuss in “short order.” He is holding back in this context:
It is a rather unenviable position. I mean, we are not in a hurry. Or? (…) We have many plans, many different ways to achieve that. We are starting to think about it. And I think that we will be talking about some other things soon, as I said, not to give away too much.

What he reveals, however, is that after the transition from Larian Studios, there are many people who are very interested in Baldur’s Gate. The community reacts to this statement.

“Inspired by the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Hasbro hints at plans to exploit the now profitable IP in the future,” is the most popular comment. The response of another user reads:
Their problem is that there is only one Larian. The bar is set so high that a fourth game would most likely disappoint. I would bet that they would milk the franchise with a movie and a TV series, and then risk a fourth game.
A comment from the user “Striferias” sums up the overall sentiment best: “A studio would have to be crazy to try to emulate Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3.”
What is Larian Studios working on instead? Studio head Swen Vincke announced at last year’s Game Developers Conference 2024 that Larian does not want to make another game in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons.
Instead, they are currently working on two new projects, which are still said to be in the early stages. Vincke says that he and the team are very hyped, but it is justified hype as it feels good and looks really good (via Steam).
