For the political systems behind the MMO Seed, the Berlin studio “Klang Games” needs the help of a Harvard professor.
As reported by Venturebeat, the studio “Klang Games” has secured the collaboration of Lawrence Lessig. Lessig is a law professor at Harvard University. He usually deals with constitutional law or helps emerging democracies establish the legal frameworks for government work.
Colonization of an Exoplanet
Now Lawrence is to construct the political systems in an MMO.
Seed uses the technology SpatialOS, which we recently presented, to create the simulation of an exoplanet. Players are to colonize an alien planet. There will be cooperation, conflicts, and all conceivable interactions.
In Seed, communities are to emerge. The world is to evolve, even when players are logged out. The idea is that players set the daily routines of several characters and thus steer the development. Everything that happens should influence everything else: the economic, the ecological, the social, and also the political.

The community is constantly under threat – attention must be paid to the physical and mental health of the characters. Progress should be organic.
The developers want to create a huge sandbox with interconnected systems – what players do with it is up to them. The studio firmly believes in the power of player interactions.
How do different democratic structures affect the world?
The Harvard professor wants to create democratic structures in the game and give the players various options on how a government could look.
From the simplest conditions – as little government as possible – to a monarchy or various forms of democracy. It is interesting for him to see, how the individual governments affect each other and how the worlds evolve.
Seed is expected to be available in early 2018 in an earlier version. Then the studio also wants to recruit players.
The studio Klang was founded in 2013 in Reykjavik by three Icelanders. However, the studio moved to Berlin. Currently, they are located in Kreuzberg and, according to their own account, consume large amounts of hot sauce.
We have reported several times about the technology SpatialOS, which Seed also uses. It should allow smaller development teams to create worlds where millions of players can interact with each other. Investors are so convinced by the idea that they have invested so much money in the company behind SpatialOS that its value now amounts to 1 billion US dollars.
