5. Imperio
The control spell Imperio is not without reason one of the three Unforgivable Curses, the application of which is punishable by life imprisonment in Azkaban.
It allows the caster to gain complete control over the will of their victim. Individual actions can be forced, or even mental control can be exerted for years.
With much willpower, however, it is possible to break the spell. Therefore, Imperio only ranks fifth in this ranking.
4. Crucio
Crucio is the next Unforgivable Curse on this list. It causes extreme pain and is therefore also known as the torture curse. Although the spell has no visible, physical consequences, prolonged use can drive the victim to madness.
The most famous victims of the curse are Alice and Frank Longbottom, Neville’s parents. After prolonged torture, including by Bellatrix Lestrange, they require permanent care in St. Mungo’s Hospital. Hermione also fell victim to the curse by Bellatrix’s hand.
Crucio is one of the most brutal and powerful spells, thus it ranks fourth.
3. Sectumsempra
Sectumsempra is an injury curse developed by Severus Snape. The caster inflicts quick, deep cuts on their victim that resemble sword strikes. Like Crucio, the curse also causes great pain and can lead to serious psychological consequences with long-term use.
Additionally, however, Sectumsempra also injures the body. Small cuts can be closed with the healing spell Vulnera Sanentur. However, once severed body parts can never be healed again. For example, George Weasley lost his left ear in this way.
Due to the severe consequences and the danger of death from blood loss that threatens in the absence of treatment, Sectumsempra ranks in this ranking in third place.
2. Pestis Incendium
The Demon Fire is summoned with the incantation Pestis Incendium and is probably the most dangerous magical fire. It takes the form of large beasts and quickly pursues and devours everything that is within reach.
What has been burned by Demon Fire can no longer be magically repaired. Therefore, the spell is also one of the few ways to destroy a Horcrux.
The spell is extremely difficult to control and highly dangerous. Neither water nor other conventional extinguishing spells can eliminate the fire.
There is a counter-spell that is not known in detail. Due to its enormous destructive power, however, Demon Fire still ranks second among the most powerful spells.
1. Avada Kedavra
The third Unforgivable Curse is the killing curse Avada Kedavra. When the spell is uttered, a green flash of light appears. If this strikes, the victim dies instantly, without any external signs of violence.
It is not possible to magically block the killing curse. The only chance of survival is to evade the curse or seek shelter behind physical objects.
To be able to bring about death so immediately is undoubtedly very powerful. Many dark wizards, such as Voldemort, also wielded this magical weapon. Therefore, Avada Kedavra, probably not surprisingly, ranks first in this ranking.
