Former Bungie CEO Harold Ryan has founded a new company. We explain what he plans to do.
Who is Harold Ryan? Harold Ryan joined the game studio Bungie in 2000 as a Test Manager. He rose to become the CEO there. Ryan was the driving force behind the split from Microsoft in 2007. In 2016, he resigned and left Bungie.
An interesting company
Why did he leave the company? At the end of 2015/beginning of 2016, Bungie’s game Destiny was in crisis. Players were demanding more content, but very little was delivered. The community feared that Bungie itself was unsure of where it wanted to take Destiny. Consequently, there was a lot of criticism that plunged the studio into a crisis.
The exact reasons why Harold Ryan left Bungie were never disclosed. However, players believe it had to do with the situation surrounding Destiny at the time.
What is he doing now? Harold Ryan has founded a new company called ProbablyMonsters. However, it does not develop its own games, but takes a different approach.
What is the approach of ProbablyMonsters? The company invests in new developer studios and aims to financially support them in developing large, so-called AAA games. To do this, ProbablyMonsters collaborates with investors to provide financial resources for these studios.
So far, the company has raised $18.8 million from investors, which has been invested in the two game studios Cauldron Studios and Firewalk Studios.
A company that supports game studios
What is special about it? Harold Ryan explains that the studios are not bound to him. They are to develop titles for large and well-known publishers. Furthermore, any developer studio can declare its independence at any time.
Ryan says: “The goal is to train developer studios that don’t need me at all.”
In this way, he helps small teams establish themselves in the market and find major publishers for their games.
What kind of games are currently being developed? Cauldron Studios and Firewalk Studios are currently working on a AAA game each. What these will be is still undecided. However, Cauldron states it is interested in games with exciting and profound stories, while Firewalk aims to develop new multiplayer experiences. However, these titles are to be published by well-known publishers.
