Recently, the free-to-play MMO “Tale of Toast” has entered Early Access. What sounds like a toaster simulation like “I am Bread” is actually a hardcore open world MMO – that comes almost entirely without bread. We will show you what lies behind the cute chibi graphics.
The developer studio Toasty Leaf, consisting of just two people, wanted to create something they would enjoy playing themselves. To achieve this, they mixed elements from Runescape, World of Warcraft, Legend of Zelda, and Ragnarok Online, and packed their ideas into cute graphics. The result is an MMO that feels “old school” and whose graphics are at odds with the tough gameplay.
Into the Open World!
In the open world of Astaria, you will explore the diverse areas, conquer dungeons together, and duel with other players in the open streets. Fights are, of course, to the death. And it’s intense: if you die, you lose (almost) all of your equipment and inventory right there – and the victorious opponent can gleefully collect it.
Other features of Tale of Toast include:
- Hardcore Gameplay: It’s not meant to be a game for beginners, but aims to cater to experienced players with its complexity.
- Classless Skills System: Want to be a spellcasting warrior? No problem: you can freely choose from a variety of skills upon leveling up.
- PvP Focus: Outside of the starting zone, it’s all about combat. You must protect your life and your equipment!
- Epic Questlines: They unlock more locations and features.
- Professions: Alchemists, miners, skinners, and many more will enjoy the world.
- Dungeons: Both instanced and open dungeons scale with the levels of the entering players. Moreover, they are regenerated each time to provide a fresh experience.

When asked where the namesake toast actually is, the developers responded under the trailer shown above with this gif.
So, we still don’t quite understand the title. But maybe a powerful toast bread boss will emerge someday, seeking revenge for all the toasted bread of Astaria? Who knows!
If you’re interested in the game, you can grab it for free on Steam. However, be prepared for server issues at the beginning: there were massive problems regarding that in the first few days.
