The Halloween event of Pokémon Unite started on October 20. In addition to the new Pokémon Schlaraffel, skins, and cosmetics, there are now pumpkin crates that work like loot boxes. According to players, you should definitely stay away from them, as they are totally unfair. MeinMMO reports on the Halloween spectacle.
This is how the Halloween event works: You get pumpkins when you complete various tasks in the event tab. For example, you have to log into the game or fight in the Mare Stadium. After that, you can exchange the pumpkins you receive for rewards in the pumpkin exchange.
One of the exchangeable rewards is the pumpkin crate – the loot box of the event. You will receive it in exchange for 2 pumpkins.
How do the pumpkin crate loot boxes work? The pumpkin crates work like typical loot boxes: When you receive a crate, you can open it via your item box. You have a certain probability of drawing a specific number of pumpkins from the pumpkin crate:
- 1x pumpkin: 63.27 %
- 2x pumpkins: 31.64 %
- 5x pumpkins: 3.16 %
- 10x pumpkins: 1.58 %
- 20x pumpkins: 0.32 %
- 50x pumpkins: 0.03 %
This is unfair about the boxes and the event: Overall, you will receive 96 pumpkins in total during the event, but you need a total of 163 to receive all the rewards of the Halloween event once.
According to players, the temptation is great to exchange for pumpkin crates to hopefully reach the full required number of pumpkins. However, when looking at the probabilities, it seems nearly impossible to draw just 5 pumpkins from them – let alone 20 or 50 pumpkins.
Since the exchange already costs 2 pumpkins, it seems not very sensible to invest in these crates.
Pokémon Unite itself also commented in a brief tweet, warning players that the pumpkins are insufficient to obtain all event rewards and that they should carefully decide which rewards to select:
“Pumpkin crates are meant to test how dumb the fans are.”
What does the community say about it? Some community members warn against the pumpkin crates and recommend not getting them, stating that the crates are a scam (via reddit). They are disappointed with the event because they cannot obtain all rewards and are tempted to test their luck due to the pumpkin crates.
YouTuber Peekmp, who focuses on Pokémon Unite with his channel, also warns against the dangerous loot boxes and expresses his dissatisfaction with the Halloween event:
Another reddit post titled “So the pumpkin crates (and 40 Euro skins) are meant to test how dumb the fans are, right?” (via reddit). Many irritated players have also gathered under it:
It’s the first time I see an event in a video game that can literally screw you over. How the hell is that supposed to be fun or make us want to play more?

User lmm310 expresses concern:
This is a bigger problem than the [expensive] skins. The “premium” skins are indeed very expensive, but you know what you get for it. The pumpkin crates are 100% market research to see how players interact with something that is essentially gambling. This could be the first step towards a monetization system based on loot boxes. Believe me, that is a thousand times worse than skins for 40 Euro.

Hidden-Locust agrees:
This is just the beginning.

The community is therefore worried that the pumpkin crates are a test for Pokémon Unite, and if they are actively used, more loot box systems could follow. Some players are already threatening to stop playing Pokémon Unite at that point.
What do you think about the Halloween event? Do you agree with the community’s opinion, or do you find the whole thing not so bad? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
