Over the weekend, the Survival MMO H1Z1 hosted the Invitational, a major battle royale tournament. This caused some controversy beforehand.
They gambled $173,000 at H1Z1 over the weekend at Twitchcon. To pool that amount, part of the revenues from a specific shop box, the “H1Z1 Invitational Crate,” flowed into this prize pool. The box contained T-shirts featuring well-known streamers, for example.

4 streamers with over 1 million followers participating
During the H1Z1 tournament, two battle royale games took place, they invited US Twitch celebrities to compete for the lucrative sum. This was likely also done in the hope that the lure of money would lead the streamers to train hard and bring H1Z1 closer to their viewers, who might not have learned about H1Z1 otherwise.
Among the many streamers who accepted the invitation were several with over 1 million followers on Twitch, including Lirik, PhantomL0rd, summit1g, and sodapoppin.
On the other hand, they also gave some H1Z1 players the opportunity to participate in the event through qualifiers and competitions.
Tournament controversial among H1Z1’s most loyal fans
The tournament was not without controversy among fans, as most “core fans” would prefer to see the survival mode expanded, which is the MMO part. The battle royale, on the other hand, is a time-limited affair, more like an arena. Clearly much better suited for a stream, but not the concept with which H1Z1 initially advertised.
How the Invitational will affect the popularity of H1Z1 in the long term remains to be seen.
