You don’t always need hundreds of players to battle in an online shooter. The newly released online game Gunheart takes a different approach.
Virtual reality has been seen as the big breakthrough, but this technology has yet to truly establish itself. Gunheart aims to give it a little push by offering VR co-op shooter action with role-playing elements.
Co-op shooter with VR support
Exterminators in space. In Gunheart, you take on the role of a bounty hunter who must protect the galaxy from a horde of aliens. They are nesting in various stations scattered throughout the galaxy. You will travel to these locations via a map based on missions. A hub gives you the opportunity to equip yourself before each mission, acquire new weapons, and meet friends.
Cooperative campaign. The story campaign of Gunheart will keep you engaged for about six hours. You have the option to team up with the same friends to defeat the aliens or to play with strangers via a matchmaking system.
This is how the missions run. The quests in Gunheart offer typical shooter gameplay:
- The levels are quite linear
- You play in groups of three players
- In teams, you fight your way through the areas and take out the aliens
- Along the way, you find loot that improves your character
- Your weapons can be modified
- Your health regenerates at stations where you also find ammunition
- In total, there are nine story missions and eleven additional quests
- PvP battles are also possible in team-based skirmishes
The unique graphics and the quirky gameplay have players comparing it to Borderlands. It’s similarly crazy, but Gunheart focuses less on character stories.
Play with or without a VR headset. Gunheart gives you the option to play in VR using an HTC Vive or Oculus Rift headset. You will also use the Vive controllers. If you prefer not to, you can play without VR. However, to support VR gameplay, teleport mechanics play an important role. Instead of jumping, you teleport to specific locations in the level.
