In a blog post, Guild Wars 2 has provided insight into future plans. In addition to the roadmap for summer, a third expansion has also been announced. No one expected this ahead of time.
What happened? In a post titled “Outlook on Spring, Summer, and the Future,” Guild Wars 2 has released a roadmap for the coming months.
New episodes of the Living World, festivals, and content for PvP and WvW are announced. However, at the end of the post, there is also a hint at content beyond summer.
And it is exactly here that a third expansion is announced.
What kind of announcement is this? The announcement states that ArenaNet is working on a third expansion for Guild Wars 2. However, it is still too early to discuss details.
So far, we can only speculate about what the exact contents will be. Only a short teaser image has been released.
From this teaser image, some draw conclusions about Cantha, a continent from Guild Wars 1 that had an Asian flair. It is certainly possible after this image, as it reveals an Asian city and a suitable color scheme.
Fans are excited because no one expected it
Why are the players so excited? After the second expansion Path of Fire in September 2017, ArenaNet focused heavily on the Living World. This refers to regular content updates that bring new areas, stories, and further content. There was even the official statement that no new expansions would be developed for the time being.
However, the subsequent Season 4 disappointed players, and the gap between episodes grew larger. 2019 then followed as the most challenging year in the developer’s history. A mass layoff and content drought in summer were the consequences.
Many had almost written off Guild Wars 2 at the end of 2019.
What are the players saying now? On Reddit and other platforms, players are currently excited. They are happy, speculating, and can hardly process the announcement:

- Lowdrake: “Third expansion. Finally a reason to look forward to the future of Guild Wars 2.”

Only a few are hitting the brakes, suspecting that development could take a few more years or reminding players that Path of Fire seemed unfinished in the story.
Overall, however, a bit of euphoria seems to have broken out in a game that many had already declared dead.
Innovations coming in a week, roadmap for summer
What else is in the blog post? In addition to the third expansion, the blog post also provides insights into updates that will be released in the near future. Already on March 17, the Visions of the Past with content that players have long desired will come.
And in addition to PvE content, ArenaNet also announced innovations for PvP and WvW:
- The PvP will receive the new legendary amulet “Transcendence”
- World vs. World will receive the legendary ring “Confluence”
Both contents will likely keep players occupied longer, as is customary with legendary items. Additionally, a new 2v2 season is currently ongoing in PvP, which the author of this article really enjoys.
What happens after the update? Right after, the Super Adventure Box will take place at the end of March. This will then be followed by the third episode of the Living World, which is supposed to bring a large area similar to WvW.
After that, the following two months of the 2nd quarter will be filled with bonus events and the Dragon Rumble. In addition, the old Legends Tournament, a special PvP event, will be revived.
How has the year been so far? Guild Wars 2 has already received an episode of the Living World and a big update for PvP and balance in the first two months of 2020.
So far, the developer ArenaNet seems to be able to keep its promise, according to which something exciting is supposed to happen every month. Allegedly, ArenaNet is also working on another game for consoles.
