The Lunar New Year in Guild Wars 2 was supposed to get a new look in 2020. However, the new rewards received a lot of criticism. The developers took this to heart and made many players happy with just one adjustment.
What is different about the Lunar New Year? With the return of the Lunar New Year on January 14, several new features were introduced into the annual event:
- There is a new challenge where you fight celestial animals in Divinity’s Reach.
- There are new vendors and rewards in the form of a shoulder piece and a back piece.
- A new weapon set, the Shining Aureate Weapons, was introduced for completing daily achievements.
What is the problem? The new features were not well received by many players. The challenge was too easy, and the rewards could not engage players in the long term. The Lunar New Year has always been considered the most boring of the festivals in GW2.
However, the biggest criticism was aimed at the weapon set. Players referred to the weapons as cheap “reskins” and furthermore, they had nothing shiny or magnificent about them. Players were disappointed because they had been looking forward to new and especially in-game obtainable weapon skins.
However, the developers from ArenaNet have now responded and made some really good adjustments.
Revised Weapon Set Attracts Players to the Festival
What do the weapons look like now? In a forum post, the developers presented the weapons and announced that they will come into the game with the new episode on January 28. Already obtained old weapons will be directly replaced by the new skin.
The new skins have been visually updated and now have a shiny effect, which better matches the name. The developers showcased them in a short video:
How are players reacting? On reddit, many players are excited about the adjustment. They write:
- The_aren: “I am very happy with it. I have no problem with reskins, but the original weapons were really created with little effort.”
- Chabb: “Oh, then I guess I have to start doing my daily achievements now.”
- Orihkeks: “A big thank you to the developers who redesigned the weapons. You did a really good job.”
Why was the change important? A good reward ensures that the Lunar New Year is played more actively. Moreover, there has been a lot of criticism of Guild Wars 2 lately, which has taken some bizarre forms.
The change to the weapons also sends a signal that player feedback is being received by the developers. This is also why many players are reacting so enthusiastically to the adjustment.
