In the MMORPG Guild Wars 2 (PC), there are loot boxes that contain more or less useful items. These boxes are now supposed to contain guaranteed items and consolation prizes, making them a bit fairer.
Loot boxes have caused trouble for Buy2Play games since the controversy surrounding Battlefront 2. This also applies to Guild Wars 2. In ArenaNet’s Buy2Play MMORPG, there was recently stress due to special RNG boxes for mount skins.
To make the boxes a bit fairer and to placate the players, the developers have adjusted the mechanics of the loot boxes.
Guaranteed Items and Consolation Prizes
The “Black Lion Chests,” the loot boxes from Guild Wars 2, now contain at least two random items and one guaranteed seasonal item, plus a Black Lion figurine. The figurine is a sort of consolation prize that does nothing on its own. However, you can use the figurines as trade currency and specifically exchange them for coveted items.
Among the trade items are useful things like teleports to friends, makeover kits, and even skins. However, keep in mind that you often need quite a few of such figurines, and even inexpensive items, like the teleport, cost 5 figurines.
An Expensive Fun?
Opening a chest costs about 1.50 Euros. So, you have to invest quite a bit of money into chests to benefit from the figurines. This new system is particularly worthwhile for people who open a lot of boxes.
Additionally, there is a free loot box with a key for all players who log in and have purchased either the base game or one of the two expansions.
