On August 25, 2012, Guild Wars 2 was released for PC. Now, 8 years after the release, the MMORPG announces its arrival on Steam. However, this will take a few more months.
When will GW2 be released on Steam? Guild Wars 2 now has an official page on Steam. It states that the MMORPG is set to be released in November 2020. While that date is still some time away, it nonetheless creates excitement among fans.
They have been demanding a Steam release for years and hope that Guild Wars 2 will gain more attention, generate revenue, and continue to be developed for a long time.
Since the base game is already Free2Play, it should be very easy for many new users to get started. Additionally, those who want to access all the content of Guild Wars 2 must only purchase the expansion Path of Fire with real money. The rest can theoretically be earned with in-game currency.
However, a drawback is that you cannot use your existing account on Steam! ArenaNet announced this in a press release.
Is a late release on Steam worth it?
Even though Guild Wars 2 is being released on Steam many years after its original release, it could still be worth it for the MMORPG.
This was also shown by the late release of SWTOR, which only launched on Steam on July 21. There, it reached a peak of 34,210 concurrent players at launch. Some of them may have created a fresh account.
However, many other MMORPGs also released later and still enjoy great popularity. This is especially true for Black Desert, Final Fantasy XIV, and The Elder Scrolls Online, which are among the best MMOs on Steam.
It is quite possible that Guild Wars 2 will join them there as well.
Steam release as a sign of a major update?
Many players on Reddit wonder why Guild Wars 2 is only coming to Steam in November. Some hope for a major update that could coincide with this timeframe.
Since the end of the current episode Jormag’s Awakening, the Icebrood Saga has been on a summer break. In September, a new fractal is set to appear and the next episode will not be released until October, possibly not until November.
It is possible that the new episode and the Steam release will coincide.
However, what will not happen in November is the release of the upcoming expansion 3. This is expected to take players to Cantha, although I personally do not like that.
