Guild Wars 2 halts the development of new legendary weapons. We have the details.
Living World in exchange for legendary weapons
When Heart of Thorns, the first expansion for Guild Wars 2, was announced, legendary weapons were touted as a major feature of the game. The first set of legendary weapons was delivered, with more expected to follow in upcoming content patches, providing even more options. These plans have now come to a sudden end.
In the official forum of the game, Game Director Mike O’Brien announced that the development of new legendary weapons has been put on indefinite hold. Previously, 6 developers were fully dedicated to creating new weapons; they are now being reassigned to other tasks. It is even mentioned specifically: all developers will now focus on creating new content for the upcoming season of the “Living World,” which Guild Wars 2 will expand with new stories at regular intervals.
In O’Brien’s official statement, he writes:
“As Game Director, I sometimes have to make tough decisions. One thing I believe is that we must focus on the core experience of the game before taking on additional responsibilities. In 2010, I wrote in the ‘Guild Wars 2 Design Manifesto’ that we aim to create a lively and dynamic world where there is always something to do. Let’s ensure that we succeed in that.”
In the forum, player opinions are divided. Some praise that O’Brien has the courage to make difficult decisions, even if he steps on someone’s toes in the process. Other players feel disappointed since Guild Wars 2 had previously advertised the upcoming legendary weapons.
