The fantasy MMORPG Guild Wars 2 is a success story. This is what Game Director Colin Johanson said in an interview.
In a conversation with Tentonhammer , the Game Director of GW2 Colin Johanson expressed pride in what has been achieved and reflected on ten years of Guild Wars.
The first Guild Wars was a hit right away, a rarity for a studio to start so strongly. Guild Wars 2 then represented a massive step forward and exceeded all expectations.
When Johanson started at Guild Wars, there were 50 employees. Today there are 300, and they continue to grow thanks to the success of Guild Wars 2. This growth in employees is the best measure of a studio’s success.
There’s really no better barometer for a game franchise’s success than to be able to say that we’ve continued to grow the talent around it and the resources that are being put into it. When I started working on the Guild Wars franchise we had around 50 folks, we’re up near 300 now and continuing to grow due to the success of Guild Wars 2.
The own philosophy of GW2 will also be pursued in the next expansion Heart of Thorns. Thus, there will be no increase in the level cap. And also the other design principles of GW2 will be applied, continuing to work on challenging the “traditional MMO conventions”. This is seen as the cornerstone of success.
