A Guardian in Destiny 2 has once again pointed out an underrated exotic submachine gun. It once was allowed to retain a strong trait, which few know about. The reason is a change to the weapon trait “Rampage,” which breaks the rules on this Exo because it deals more damage, even more so since Lightfall.
Which weapon secretly breaks the rules? The memory of this “rule breaker” was a post published on Reddit. There, a Guardian drew attention to the old Exo weapon “The Huckleberry” and its perk “Rampage.”
This weapon was once popular among many players, especially for add-clears.
- The longer you fire, the higher the rate of fire becomes.
- When you eliminate an enemy, the weapon partially reloads.
- Additionally, for each kill, you get a stack of “Rampage,” up to a maximum of three stacks.
- Those who still possess the catalyst can reload the entire magazine after a kill and then shred through hordes of enemies in sustained fire adventures.
However, the fun ended when Bungie significantly nerfed the perk “Rampage”. Many were disappointed and set aside their little Tex Mechanica add shredder.
What many do not know anymore: The 750 RPM submachine gun “Huckleberry” was allowed to keep its old Rampage damage values and benefits from the 40% bonus against enemies with a red health bar since Lightfall.
A submachine gun with “Super Rampage”
In 2019, Bungie drastically nerfed a total of 8 perks, including “Rampage,” “Kill Clip,” “Daredevil,” “Multikill Clip,” “Desperado,” and “Surrounded.” The adjustment was intended to align PvE multipliers with those in PvP.
- Before the nerf, “Rampage” granted a damage bonus of about 66% at maximum.
- After the nerf, the perk only provided about 33% at most, so half.
For the legendary weapons with this perk, the nerf was devastating. “Rampage” was still good, but it also made the Guardians only half as much fun, leading them to seek alternatives.
The descriptive property of the perk “Rampage” was changed and from then on only stated the lower damage values. This also relegated the Huckleberry to the vault for some Guardians.
What was completely overlooked, however, was that Bungie exempted exotic weapons from this change. An exotic weapon should offer a better advantage than legendary weapons.
So “The Huckleberry” was allowed to keep the original Rampage with the full damage bonus x3.
- Unlike other versions of “Rampage,” the exotic variant therefore grants twice the damage bonus.
- With a 3x stack, you are back at the rich 66% extra damage.
This is of course not only true for “Rampage.” The exotic auto rifle “Monte Carlo” also escaped the nerf. Its perk “Daredevil” was also retained at 65% instead of the new 33%.
Season 21 pushed the submachine gun even more: In the current Season 21, there was another change that “The Huckleberry,” which is a kinetic submachine gun, benefits from. The damage bonus of 40% for exotic primary weapons…
Advantage leads to strong confusion: When putting everything together, it becomes clear: The weapon causes confusion due to the properties of the perks. One informs oneself about damage values and cannot recognize that there is a weapon exempted from this that actually makes more damage with its “Super Rampage.”
This is also the reason why some players like Nukesnipe have insisted for years that the name of the perk on the Huckleberry must be changed. Exotic “Rampage” or “Daredevil” are totally underrated and do not indicate that it is a much more powerful weapon trait.
Especially since Bungie mentioned this fact in the patch notes exactly once and never again. The player colantalas comments:
I love the Huckleberry, it is so underrated. Many have switched to Osteo Striga, but the Huckleberry feels much better to me when shooting. It also has one of the best reload animations in the game.
