With the Shadowkeep expansion for Destiny 2, a new armor system comes into play in the form of Armor 2.0. And finally, we know what will happen to the old armors from year 1 and 2 – much to the delight of the community.
What is Armor 2.0 about? Armor 2.0 is a new armor system that Destiny 2 will rely on starting from the release of Shadowkeep . Armor 2.0 is supposed to ensure that you no longer have to compromise between good looks and functionality when choosing your armor.
This new system has finally been extensively presented by Bungie. You can learn more about it here: The new Armor 2.0 revolutionizes Destiny 2.
Many fans have been waiting for this: What many Guardians have been burning to know in this context – what will happen to all the armors from the first two years – especially the legendary and exotic ones? Is Armor 2.0 only for new armor pieces from Shadowkeep? Or will old items also be adapted to the new system? There is now an answer to that.
What will happen to the armors from year 1 and 2?
In short: Almost all legendary and exotic armor pieces from year 1 and 2 will be adapted to Armor 2.0 – with minor differences. This is what will change for the old armors:
This is what happens to the legendary armors: All legendary armor pieces that you will receive or earn after the release of Shadowkeep will already have the new “Armor 2.0” system – including planetary sets like those from the EDZ, old raid armors, parts from the Escalation Protocol, et cetera. Parts that you can buy from vendors will have fixed rolls; random rolls will come from drops.

However, you will have to earn these “old” armors again. Parts that you already have in your possession (equipped, in inventory or vault) will remain at their current state. The only legendary armor that can be updated to the new standard with the release of Shadowkeep, even though you already own it, is the Solstice armor from 2019.
Old legendary armors that you pull from the collection will not have Armor 2.0. The Trials armors or faction-specific armor pieces from the Crucible will also remain at the old state if you still possess them. Because these will probably not be available to earn again with Shadowkeep. It is unknown whether you can pull an Armor 2.0 version from the collection if you have already earned the armor once with the new 2.0 standard.
This is what happens to the exotic armors: All Exotics that you receive after the Shadowkeep release will already feature Armor 2.0. All armor Exotics that you already own by then will remain with the old system. But if you get an Exotic from the collection after Shadowkeep, you will receive it with Armor 2.0. Only the rolls will always be fixed. If you want different rolls, you will rely on new drops.
What does this mean for the players? Years 1 and 2 had a lot of cool armors to offer. Since they can still be earned from their original sources with the “Armor 2.0” standard, it is worthwhile for the Guardians to play old content such as the Leviathan raids again. This way, the variety of visual armors will also increase again, because since Forsaken, the old pieces have hardly played a role.
This is how the fans are reacting: On Reddit, this news is celebrated by many fans. Some fans say it was probably the best news from the stream.
The corresponding thread received over 3,200 upvotes within 14 hours on the discussion platform. Many find it good that this also breathes new life into old activities and long-forgotten areas of the game. Finally, Fashion plays a bigger role – with many additional options that almost exhaust the entire spectrum of Destiny 2.
Some joke, “My entire armor is now absolutely useless, but I am sooo excited.” Many simply say thank you.
What do you think about it? Have you also longed for the many armors from the first two years of Destiny 2 to finally play a role again? Will you play the old content for it? Or are you no longer interested in the old stuff?
