The hype around GTA 5 Online on the livestreaming platform Twitch has been reignited. For a brief moment, the action game was even ranked number 1 among the most viewed titles. But why?
What is happening with GTA 5? This year, GTA 5 will be 8 years old. Just a few days ago, the game made all other titles on Twitch look old. The action game is booming again on Twitch. For a brief moment, over 400,000 viewers were watching GTA 5 streams simultaneously.
The reason for this is not new content from Rockstar Games itself, but a server from the community.
Roleplay helps GTA 5 (once again) rise
What’s new: The NoPixel 3.0 roleplay server for GTA Online has now launched. Many streamers, some of whom have also been roleplaying on older versions, are now returning to the RP world of GTA 5. This pleases the viewers and simultaneously boosts the numbers on Twitch significantly.
In the tweet from Rod Breslau, you can see that the viewer numbers are even surpassing popular titles like League of Legends or the hyped Rust.
Over 413,000 people watched GTA 5 streams simultaneously on February 5, 2021.
According to the website Sullygnome, the peak on Sunday, February 7, was even at 438,000 viewers simultaneously. Big streamers currently participating in the RP in GTA 5 are:
- xQc
- sodapoppin
- pokelawls
- forsen
- LIRIK
In the following graphic, you can see how the average viewer numbers and the most simultaneous viewers increased in the last 90 days for GTA Online.

What makes the server so good? Generally, GTA Online is one of the MMOs that are best suited for roleplaying. On NoPixel 3.0, you can really let loose in roleplay:
You have the opportunity to play criminals, police officers, or even “normal” citizens. You come up with a story for the character you want to embody. An employee at the burger joint who has to deliver the right ingredients to his boss can be just as interesting as a criminal who secretly fans the flames between others.
Anyone who gets caught ends up in the police station or even in court. Together with a lawyer, the goal is to convince those present that you are innocent or less guilty.

Anyone wanting to participate has to grab one of the coveted spots. Currently (February 9, 2021), the spots for the “regular whitelisting” are closed. Only donors can apply (via nopixel.net). It takes about 14 to 30 days to get a decision on your application.
Only when your application has been approved will you receive a spot on the server and be allowed to play.
Have you now gotten a desire to start roleplaying in GTA Online? Decide for yourself whether you first want to check out the big streamers on Twitch and remain a silent observer, or if you want to take the reins yourself.
