Will the leaders of Rockstar and Take-Two provide full mod support for GTA 6? This very topic came up during the recent financial report by the publisher.
What is Rockstar and Take-Two’s stance on mod support? During the earnings call of the recent financial report, Take-Two not only provided an update on the release timeline for GTA 6, but CEO Strauss Zelnick also spoke about content created by players (“user-generated content”, or UGC for short).
The publisher’s CEO stated: “Of course, we are excited about what we see in the modding community for GTA, and we think that is quite exciting. Ultimately, entertainment companies need to deliver great entertainment to consumers. That’s the starting point.”
With GTA 6, the popular franchise is making another noticeable leap in graphics:
Furthermore, Zelnick stated that they are proud to create the best entertainment in the world with GTA and co., and that they want to allow consumers to expand and enhance this content for their personal use in the future.
Mod support for GTA 6 is clearly planned.
It is important, as the CEO concluded, to protect one’s own intellectual property, as well as the intellectual property of others. Moreover, Zelnick does not believe that the company or even the industry will ever be defined solely by mods and UGC. User-generated content services like Roblox are more platforms than digital entertainment titles.
What plans could Take-Two have for the mods? According to a report from dexerto.com, the developers plan to enhance the experience of GTA Online through advanced mod tools. As a result, Rockstar Games reportedly acquired the FiveM mod team in August 2023 (via rockstargames.com).
FiveM is behind the largest Rockstar roleplay and creator communities. Apparently, they are now working on a public version of the mission creator, which is set to be integrated into GTA Online in the fall of 2024.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC? While it is certainly possible to use privately developed modifications on consoles, this often proves much more complicated and restrictive than on PC. The GTA series is particularly not known for simultaneous launches on consoles and PC.
- GTA 3 was released on October 22, 2001, for PlayStation 2, with the PC release following on May 21, 2002.
- GTA: Vice City landed on PlayStation 2 on October 27, 2002, with the PC version making its debut in May 2003.
- GTA: San Andreas was released in the USA on October 26, 2004 (and on October 29, 2004, in the EU) for PlayStation 2, with ports for PC and Xbox following on June 7 and 10, 2005, respectively.
- On April 29, 2008, owners of an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 were able to enjoy the launch of GTA IV, while the PC version did not leave the starting blocks until December 2, 2008.
- GTA V was released on September 17, 2013, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and it continued on Xbox One and PS4 on November 18, 2014. PC users had to wait until April 14, 2015.
Currently, everything indicates that Rockstar and Take-Two will continue this strategy with GTA 6. The release in the fall of 2025 is only confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. The recent financial report made no mention of a PC port: Take-Two confirms release timelines for GTA 6, Civilization 7, and a new game for The Lord of the Rings
