Modders and hackers in online sessions of GTA 5 can be dangerous and can take your money. With a trick, the cheaters can create a kind of insurance fraud and use your online money. It’s extremely annoying when suddenly several hundred thousand GTA dollars are missing that you earned with great effort. We will show you how this method works and what you can do against the fraud
Hackers use insurance fraud in GTA 5
Modders often cause frustration in an online session of GTA 5. They often randomly kill various players over and over again or destroy your personal vehicles. Currently, they are using the destruction of vehicles to their advantage. By committing insurance fraud, the modders make the game take your money. But how does this fraud work? We won’t give exact details here, but in theory, the fraud works like this: The modders spawn expensive vehicles that they label as your property. These vehicles are then quickly destroyed. However, a hack tells the game that another player from the session has destroyed this vehicle, even if that player was not near the vehicle.
As a result, you are marked as “Unsportsmanlike” and have to pay an insurance fee for the destroyed vehicle. Since the hackers don’t just destroy the vehicle once, but do it multiple times per minute, you can slowly see your money dwindling.
In the video, you can see (bottom left) how the player is accused of destroying another player’s car. Meanwhile, you can watch his balance getting lower and lower. This method of the modders was already popular in March but has diminished, presumably due to a fix from Rockstar Games. As some players report, insurance fraud is currently happening frequently again. You can see a current example in the Twitter video.
How can you protect yourself against modders and cheaters?
Unfortunately, it’s hard to protect yourself from this kind of hacks. The simplest solution would be not to enter online lobbies but to play in invite-only or friend sessions.
If you still play in online lobbies, you have to expect this problem.
As soon as you see red negative numbers appearing under your money display and you receive an unsportsmanlike punishment, you should act quickly. If you haven’t destroyed another vehicle, a modder may have it out for you. In the two video examples, you can see how this hack plays out.
If you suspect that you are a victim of a modder, quickly disconnect your internet connection or exit the game via the task manager. This way, you can avoid losing even more money.
We hope that the developers will soon get this problem under control with a hotfix or similar measures. Currently, these exploits are not recognized by the game.
